Olaf scholz replaces Merkel to end her 16 years reign as German Chancellor

Scholz has been sworn in as Germany’s new chancellor, replacing Angela Merkel’s who has led for 16 years.

When taking Oath, Scholz promised he would do his best to ensure that Germany has a new start.

On her part,Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel ended her 31 year political career thanking everyone for helping her deliver her promises to German people,Merkel also told Mr Scholz to approach the task ahead of him”with joy”.

Scholz on his part vowed to devote his energies to the welfare of the German people – but he did not ask for God’s help, a phrase that is usually included in the oath of office and was spoken also spoken before by Merkel.

The German parliament, the Bundestag, backed him as chancellor by 395 votes to 303, and he was then formally appointed as the ninth federal chancellor by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The new chancellor,hailed Merkel as a great chancellor and thanked her for a close and trustful relationship over the past years.

Merkel leaves office as German’s longest serving post war Chancellor just 10 days short of the 16 years and 26 days that Helmut Kohl spent in office between 1982 and 1998.

In his reign,Scholz is expected to take charge of his cabinet amidst diplomatic uncertainty in the European Union (EU) .
