Nigeria shoot-to-kill order issued over jail breaks

Nigeria’s interior minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has ordered prison guards to “shoot to kill” upon jail breaks.

Rauf made those announcements in an address to prison staff in the southern city of Ibadan saying that. Anyone who attempts to breach the security of the prison “must not live to tell the tale”.

This was based on current attacks on prisons over the past one year by armed groups.

The attacks had enabled more than 5000 inmates to escape and with a high number of detainees and prison guards killed.

According to a survey showed, Nigeria has a slow judicial system with over 7000 inmates awaiting trial. The interior minister laid claim that this was partly the main reason for the inmates jail breaks and contemplates.

Speaking to a group of law keepers, the minister claimed that more than 1001 inmates were awaiting trial and thus there was a surge of inmates in prisons.

Despite this he said that the officers should make sure no one escapes from jail.

“Any effort to breach our facility is not acceptable. Don’t shoot to injure, shoot to kill. Don’t shoot to disable, shoot to kill,” he said

Jailbreaks are common in Nigeria as it continues to struggle with multiple security crises from kidnapping syndicates to an Islamist insurgency in the north-east.

In April last year, more than 1800 inmates were freed by gunmen who ambushed Owerri police headquarters, in south-eastern Nigeria.

In September, 240 prisoners escaped after unidentified gunmen attacked a facility in Nigeria’s Kogi state

Human rights activists have it on claim that the policy may be well abused by the law keepers. Forcing many innocent inmates to die.

They also claim that this would also make the prison guards rampage on each home near the prison. And this would caouseproperty in search of escapees, which is not guaranteed by the law.
