With Just over four months to the August 9th general elections, aspirants are moving with speed to woo voters to support them ahead of the slated polls. In Kiambu County its no different with the gubernatorial race taking shape.

A number of aspirants are seeking to unseat the Incumbent ,Governor James Nyoro who is also seeking a second term in office. Among the prospective candidates are, senator Wamatangi, Thika Mp Wainaina Jungle, former Governor Kabogo, and Gatundu south Mp Moses Kuria.

Some of these gubernatorial hopefuls have been traversing the region and holding low-key meetings with their strategists and residents while trying to sell their agendas and rally locals’ support.

Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi and Thika Mp Wainaina Jungle will battle it out for the United Democratic Alliance party ticket, whereas incumbent Governor Nyoro will be seeking another term via the Jubilee party, William Kabogo will use his newly launched Tujibebe party and Moses Kuria via Chama Cha Kazi Party.

The five will fight it out for an estimated 1,180,920 Kiambu votes with each gunning for the highest percentage of votes in populous constituencies.

The county has 12 sub-counties. Ruiru has the highest number of registered voters at 159,337, followed by Thika (147,761), Juja (114,761), Githunguri (99,384), Kiambaa (95,413), Kikuyu (91,157), Limuru (87,258),kabete (85,446), Kiambu (80,730), Lari (76,655), Gatundu South (75,858) and Gatundu North (67,598).

The Incumbent governor is currently spearheading the construction of modern markets in Makongeni, Gatukuyu and Kamwangi in Thika and Gatundu North sub-counties.

He believes that his pursuit to revive agriculture and promote agribusiness in the county will give him a competitive edge in the race

The governor has been riding on the development projects that his administration has initiated across the county, some of which are complete and others underway, to woo voters.

Thika Town MP Wainaina Jungle , who won his seat on an independent ticket in a Jubilee stronghold in 2017, is also on the fore-front in unseating Governor Nyoro in this year’s general election, with recent polls showing that he is the most popular candidate in the gubernatorial race.

Mp Wainaina , who has been running a foundation for over two decades beat Jubilee’s Alice Ng’ang’a in 2017 polls with 56,476 votes against her 50,910 votes .

The Mp banks on his work both as an MP in Thika Town constituency and a charity ambassador in his quest for the gubernatorial seat.

Senator Kimani Wamatangi is also said to be eyeing the gubernatorial seat after two terms in the Senate. Senator Wamatangi will also be riding on charity works by Wamatangi Foundation especially during the Covid-19 period to win voters’ hearts and their support in his pursuit for the coveted seat.

The soft spoken legislator has been blowing hot and cold on what political vehicle he will use in his quest to become the 3rd governor of the county of Kiambu, but his recent sentiments has showed that he plans to decamp to Dp Ruto’s UDA.

Gatundu south Mp, Moses Kuria is the latest politician from Kiambu to declare his interest for the county top seat ,though seen as a ” late entrant”. The vocal MP had initially claimed that he will not be engaging in elective politics in 2022 but changed his mind a few days after holding a Thanks giving Rally in Thika on February 19.

Kuria caught many by surprise on Tuesday, August 31, after disclosing that he would not vie for any seat in the 2022 General Election affirming that he would solely focus on building his Chama Cha Kazi party in the Mt Kenya region.

Late last month, Kuria took to his social media announcing that his supporters from his Kiambu backyard had requested him to be on the ballot in the August 9 polls. The lawmaker shared a poster of himself depicting that he was in the race on a Chama Cha Kazi party ticket.

The battle for the seat is expected to escalate even as the clock ticks towards the party primaries and general election and also as new entrants join the race.
